One great way for your dog to safely join in on the festivities is to prepare them their own Thanksgiving themed dog treats. I have tried out some recipes that use common Thanksgiving ingredients and am sharing my two favorites with you. Both recipes were easy and quick, and most importantly, dog approved! The ingredients used are all considered dog safe, but, if your dog has allergies or you are worried it is, of course, a good idea to check with your vet first.
Turkey and Pumpkin Training Treats
12 oz. cup cooked, plain, white meat turkey
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup pumpkin
1 cups tapioca flour*
(The tapioca flour gives these treats the soft, squishy texture. They will work with any other flour you would like to use but will end up as crumbly, biscuit type treats.)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix all ingredients in a food processor
- Pour mixture into a mold like the pyramid pan or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cook in the oven 12 minutes
- Let cool, then remove from mold OR cut with pizza cutter into bite-sized pieces
Turkey, Cranberry and Pumpkin Dog Biscuits
1 cup cooked, plain, white meat turkey
1/4 cup water
1 cup pumpkin
1/4 chopped dried cranberries
2 cups whole wheat flour
- Preheat the oven to 325F.
- In a food processor, puree the cooked turkey and water together.
- Add the cooked sweet potatoes and the egg to the food processor and blend together.
- Scoop out the mixture into a large bowl.
- Add the cranberries.
- Add the flour to the bowl and stir until the mixture forms a bread dough like consistency. I got right in there and mixed it up with my hands.
- Place the dough on a well-floured surface and roll out to 1/4″ thickness. The dough is fairly sticky, so you will need to keep dusting with flour to prevent it from sticking to your counters and the rolling pin.
- Use whatever shape and size cookie cutters that you like and cut out individual dog treats, re-rolling and cutting the dough into shapes until it is gone.
- Place the biscuits on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown. They don’t rise or expand, so you can place them close together, getting as many as you can on one sheet.
