It can be tough leaving our beloved pooches with others. Summer is the season of lake houses, weekends at the ocean, and trips across the country, and unfortunately, our dogs aren’t always able to come with us.

There are 3 main types of pet sitting services available. Before deciding what type of pet sitter to hire remember that different dogs will have different needs. Think about your dog’s individual needs before deciding what type of pet sitting will suit Fido best. The options are:

  • Your dog stays at a kennel.
  • Your dog stays in someone else’s home.
  • Someone stays in your home with your dog.

After choosing what type of pet sitting will work best for your dog, it is important to choose a person or company that can ensure your dog’s happiness and safety while you are away. Here are some questions any professional should be able to easily and confidently answer.

  1. Are they bonded and insured?
  2. Do they have any past reviews you can view?
  3. What would they do if my dog was injured or sick?
  4. How would they keep my dog safe out on walks?
  5. What would they do if my dog was being naughty or otherwise misbehaving?
  6. What is included with this price (many places include breakfast and dinner, and maybe a walk or two, but at some places, you have to pay for walks, etc)?
  7. How long would my dog be alone for each day?
  8. How many updates can I expect to receive? How frequently can I expect to receive them?
  9. What would my dog’s schedule look like each day?

Before committing to a dog sitter for a week or two it is a good idea to do a 2-3 day test run to make sure things go smoothly. The last thing you want it a problem to arise when you are a plane ride away.
